Your first mistake was having a single point of failure. Use a password manager with 2FA and use your normal email. Use a service like iCloud and you can use "hide my email" which proxies your email through the Apple mail servers. There is nothing wrong with ProtonMail. You'd be even more irate if your account had been compromised.
